{tab=Synopsis}From Russia with Love (1963) Synopsis: The film opens at an unnamed estate; British MI6 agent James Bond is making his way through the grounds. From Russia with Love 1963 He is followed by a white-haired man dressed in black. From Russia with Love 1963 The white-haired man emerges from behind a hedge, pulling a garrote wire from his watch, which he slips around Bond's neck; Bond is dead in a few moments. From Russia with Love 1963 Large spotlights suddenly turn on and the corpse lying at the assassin's feet is revealed to be a man wearing a mask of 007's face. From Russia with Love 1963 The assassin's supervisors emerge, documenting the mission time and revealing that the mission is a training exercise for SMERSH.
At a chess match, SPECTRE operative Number 2, Kronsteen, wins the match and is called away to meet with his boss, Number One (who's face is never seen), the mysterious leader of SPECTRE, and another operative (Number 3), Rosa Klebb, a KGB double-agent. From Russia with Love 1963 They plan to trick James Bond into stealing a Lektor decoding machine from the Soviet embassy in Istanbul, which they will then steal from Bond, while at the same time, framing him. From Russia with Love 1963 To lure Bond into the trap, Klebb will enlist an attractive female attache, Tatiana Romanov, whose cover story will be that she intends to defect to England.
Bond meets with MI6 head, M; the two immediately suspect the trap but M orders Bond to Istanbul anyway, telling him to meet with MI6 associate, Kerim Bey. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond's armorer, Q, provides Bond with a briefcase containing several devices, including a knife, a collapsible sniper's rifle and a tear-gas bomb that will explode if the case is not opened correctly.
At the SMERSH training facility seen in the opening scene, Klebb meets with Morzeny who takes her to a man named Grant, the same assassin that killed the impostor Bond. From Russia with Love 1963 Klebb looks Grant over and punches him in the abdomen with brass knuckles. From Russia with Love 1963 Seeing that Grant doesn't flinch from the blow, she orders him to be sent to Istanbul.
Bond arrives in Istanbul and is driven to Kerim Bey's offices; he is followed by the KGB but the driver, Bey's son, assures Bond that there is no danger; Bey's & the KGB's operatives tail each other constantly in Istanbul. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond meets Bey, who informs him that the Soviet embassy, though heavily protected, can be infiltrated and the Lektor can be stolen. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond checks into his hotel, asking to be given another room when he finds a listening device behind a painting. From Russia with Love 1963 He is given the bridal suite. From Russia with Love 1963 Meanwhile, Bey, relaxing with his mistress at his offices, is nearly killed when a bomb goes off: his girlfriend had lured him away from the blast zone only moments before. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond goes to Bey's office where he's briefed on the incident. From Russia with Love 1963 Bey takes Bond to the flooded catacombs below his offices and, in a rowboat, the two travel underneath the city to the Soviet embassy. From Russia with Love 1963 Bey has installed a submarine periscope under the embassy's conference room and lets Bond see who is meeting there. From Russia with Love 1963 Bey spots a Bulgarian KGB assassin, Krilencu, whom he suspects planted the bomb that nearly killed him. From Russia with Love 1963 Bey desires retaliation but chooses not to, stating that Krilencu has been out of Istanbul for a year and there is no need to start any conflict that can jeopardize Bond's mission.
Bey takes Bond to a gypsy camp outside the city for the evening. From Russia with Love 1963 After watching a bellydancer perform, the chief of the camp brings out two female rivals who vie for the hand of one of his sons. From Russia with Love 1963 The two women begin a vicious fight when the camp is attacked by the Krilencu and his Bulgarian KGB men. From Russia with Love 1963 In the ensuing gunfight, Bey is injured and Bond saved by Grant, who, from a hidden position observing the camp, shoots a man intending to attack Bond with a sword. From Russia with Love 1963 For his bravery and assistance, the gypsy chief makes Bond one of his "sons." Bond accepts but only if the man stops the fight between the women. From Russia with Love 1963 The man laughs, suggesting that Bond is too softhearted.
Bey resolves to kill Krilencu. From Russia with Love 1963 He and Bond go to Krilencu's hideout where Bey has the Turkish police knock on the agent's door. From Russia with Love 1963 Krilencu uses an escape hatch which leads him down the side of the building, making him an easy target for Bey who uses Bond's sniper rifle to shoot him. From Russia with Love 1963 The man falls to the ground dead.
Bond returns to his hotel room and is just about to take a relaxing bath when he sees a naked woman getting into his bed; it is Tatiana. From Russia with Love 1963 The two spend the night together, not knowing they are being filmed behind a one way mirror by Klebb. From Russia with Love 1963 The next day, Bond meets with Tatiana at a cathedral intending to receive a map of the Russian Consulate from her. From Russia with Love 1963 Tatiana leaves the map behind but both are stalked by an KGB agent who is killed by Grant. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond finds the map and the dead agent. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond takes the map to Bey who determines that a bomb set off in the consulate would be enough of a distraction for Bond to enter the communications room, steal the Lektor and escape with Tatiana into the catacombs below the city.
Bond later meets with Tatiana on a ferry where he records Tatiana's description of the Lektor. From Russia with Love 1963 The recording is studied by M, Miss Moneypenny and a few other officials who determine that the device Tatiana speaks of is authentic. From Russia with Love 1963 They tell M to order Bond to go ahead with the theft.
Bond reports to the Soviet embassy at precisely 3:00 PM. From Russia with Love 1963 Moments later, the bomb goes off, having been placed near the wall to the communications room. From Russia with Love 1963 The explosion breaks a hole in the wall of the room and Bond slips in easily to grab the Lektor and Tatiana and they escape into the catacombs. From Russia with Love 1963 They are led outside by Bey.
Bond's escape from Istanbul involves a lengthy ride on the Orient Express to Trieste in Italy. From Russia with Love 1963 Bey has reserved a sleeper car for both Bond and Tatiana, who are posing as a married couple. From Russia with Love 1963 They are to meet another of Bey's sons, who will give them documents and assistance in smuggling the Lektor across the Italian border. From Russia with Love 1963 Bey and Bond subdue and bind a KGB agent who had been tailing them. From Russia with Love 1963 Bey and the KGB man later turn up dead in Bey's room, both are the victims of Grant, who is also on the train. From Russia with Love 1963 At the next stop, Bond meets with one of Bey's sons and asks him to arrange for an MI6 contact to meet him at the next stop, Sarajevo. From Russia with Love 1963 At the station, Grant slips off the train and finds the MI6 agent and kills him, taking his place. From Russia with Love 1963 He meets Bond and invites him to dinner on the train; Bond is a few minutes behind. From Russia with Love 1963 Toward the end of the meal, Grant drops a sleeping pill into Tatiana's drink. From Russia with Love 1963 She becomes drowsy and falls asleep in their room. From Russia with Love 1963 Grant reveals that he has been sent to kill both Bond and Romanov and steal the Lektor. From Russia with Love 1963 He also tells Bond he plans to frame him for Tatiana's murder and cause a scandal involving Bond's tryst with her, which was filmed by Klebb. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond comes to the realization that Grant is not with SMERSH but is working for SPECTRE. From Russia with Love 1963 Grant tells Bond that he intends to torture him before killing him. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond asks for a cigarette, agreeing to pay for it with some of the gold sovereigns he has in his briefcase. From Russia with Love 1963 Grant reaches for the briefcase he'd taken from the agent he killed in Sarajevo, which explodes in a white cloud of gas when he opens it; Bond had switched the contents of his own case for Grant's prior to dinner. From Russia with Love 1963 Grant is temporarily stunned by the tear gas and Bond attacks him. From Russia with Love 1963 The two fight viciously, with Bond eventually strangling Grant with the garrote wire in his watch. The train is forced to stop at a road crossing a few minutes later, part of Grant's exit route. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond revives Tatiana and they jump off the train.
At Number One's office, Klebb is admonished for the failure of her plan. From Russia with Love 1963 Morzeny enters the room and releases a dagger in the toe of his boot. From Russia with Love 1963 Although Klebb expects to be killed for her failure, Morzeny stabs Kronsteen in the leg with the knife, which has been tipped with a powerful poison. From Russia with Love 1963 Kronsteen falls dead and Number One remarks that the poison didn't work quickly enough. From Russia with Love 1963 Klebb is given a second chance at Bond in Italy.
At Grant's stop, Bond and Tatiana see a flower truck. From Russia with Love 1963 The man is an operative working for Grant; Bond subdues the man and takes his truck. From Russia with Love 1963 As they drive toward Grant's next stop, they are attacked by a Russian helicopter. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond is able to shoot the chopper down. From Russia with Love 1963 He then coerces Grant's man into telling him that Grant will escape by boat and they drive there. From Russia with Love 1963 They steal Grant's boat and head for Trieste, throwing the man overboard. From Russia with Love 1963 A few hours later they're intercepted by Morzeny and several men in additional boats. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond dumps the large barrels of fuel, which have been shot and are leaking, into the water. From Russia with Love 1963 Morzeny's boats, having stopped, are set aflame when Bond ignites the floating fuel with a flare pistol. From Russia with Love 1963 Morzeny and his men, crashing each other's boats together, are burned alive in the conflagration.
Bond and Tatiana reach Venice and are preparing to leave for England when Klebb enters their hotel room, disguised as a maid. From Russia with Love 1963 She grabs the Lektor and holds Bond at gunpoint, ordering Romanov out of the room. From Russia with Love 1963 Klebb raises the pistol to kill Bond but is hit by Tatiana. From Russia with Love 1963 Bond attacks Klebb, pinning her against the wall with a chair, rendering the dagger in the toe of her shoe useless. From Russia with Love 1963 Tatiana recovers Klebb's pistol and, after a brief hesitation, shoots Klebb, killing her.
Bond and Tatiana take a romantic pleasure cruise on Venice's Grand Canal and Bond studies the film of his and Tatiana's night together. From Russia with Love 1963 He kisses Tatiana passionately and throws the film in the river.
